Johaunn August Wilhelm “J.A.W.” Iusti

20 Feb. 1817 – 1 Nov 1895

This is my great-great-great grandfather or grandfather’s brother–still working out some of the details. He is credited with the wrought iron gates at St. Michael’s Cathedral in Charleston, SC as well as many other grand ironworks throughout the Charleston area. He is buried at Bethany Lutheran Cemetery in Charleston, SC. His direct descendants now live in Laurens County, SC.

Documents With References

I have found many documents referencing JAW’s work in the Charleston area. A Google search of “J.A.W. Iusti” will yield a lot of the same Google books data. Some I collected from the archives in Charleston, SC and from a visit to St. Michaels. These are available as PDF downloads before the gallery at the end of this post.

Photos of the Gates and Cemetery

In the photo gallery below I highlight images at Bethany Lutheran Cemetery where JAW Iusti is buried. In addition I have various photographs I took at St. Michael’s Episcopal Church in Charleston. These photos show the gates wrought by Iusti as well as a family cemetery gate. These are all mentioned in the various documents and books I posted above.
